<text>The team at ECDS, including Digital Project Specialist, Adam Newman and Senior Video Producer, Steve Bransford, PHD, worked with Carlos staff members, visited the museum, and captured the current exhibition in our Joh Howett Works on Paper Gallery with their Matterport® camera. The virtual tour version extends the life of the exhibition and provides a valuable teaching resource for Emory, other colleges and universities, middle and high schools, and the public. Capturing the exhibit via this specialized camera allows future students to not only see the individual works of art featured but also experience how these works were curated into a three-dimensional exhibit experience.

This also preserves the research of the Emory students (20 undergrads and 2 graduate students) who curated this exhibition and allows future students of South Asian religions here at Emory and at other colleges and universities to immerse themselves in the exhibition, which will physically close this July.</text>

<text>“Framing Shadows” supplies a counter-narrative that challenges the pervasive “mammy” stereotype (an archetype of a black woman who worked as a nanny to a white family) and encourages viewers to consider nuanced perspectives. Dr. Wallace-Sanders selected photographs from the Langmuir Collection, an extensive collection of over 12,000 photographs depicting African American life from 1840–1970. Each image, according to Wallace-Sanders, captures a “microcosm of power dynamics involving race, gender, class, status, age, and domestic labor relations.” This exhibition is a prelude to her forthcoming book, Framing Shadows: African American Women and White Children in Domestic Portraiture.

Steve Bransford and Tesla Cariani of the ECDS assisted in filming and editing interviews with Dr. Wallace-Sanders to create short videos for the exhibition. These videos contextualize the displayed photographs, highlight the Langmuir collection, and present Dr. Wallace-Sander’s approach to looking deeply into complex inter-racial relationships in American life.</text>
